About Mermaid
Family run pool Builders, Since 1981

Third-generation, pool builders creating bespoke pools and outdoor leisure spaces across Kent and East Sussex.

Who We Are

Built on Craft. Proven in Performance.

Mermaid began in 1981 with a simple goal: to build swimming pools properly – without cutting corners, without hidden surprises, and with a level of care you can feel throughout the process.

For many homeowners, the hesitation is not whether they want a pool, it is whether they can trust the process. Concerns around disruption, budget clarity, long-term running costs and maintenance often delay the first step. Our role is to bring structure and reassurance from day one.

Today, we are a third-generation, family-run team led by Steven and James, delivering premium bespoke pools, refurbishments and leisure facilities across Kent and East Sussex. We guide clients carefully from early feasibility and design through to technical specification and aftercare – so decisions feel informed rather than overwhelming.

While bespoke concrete pools remain central to our work, many projects evolve into complete outdoor living environments designed for relaxation, wellbeing and year-round use. Integrated saunas, hot tubs, swim spas, enclosures and considered furnishings are planned as part of a cohesive whole – not as afterthoughts.

What clients value most is confidence: clear guidance at the outset, disciplined workmanship on site, and a team that remains accountable long after handover through ongoing maintenance and support.

  • In-house service from design and specification through to installation and long-term maintenance
  • Integrated outdoor leisure environments, thoughtfully planned from the start
  • Premium materials and construction standards, with transparent pricing and clear scope
  • Local expertise built over 40 years

Meet the Team

The People Behind the Build

Mermaid remains a hands-on, family-run business led by Steven and James. Your project is not passed between disconnected departments. The same team that helps shape the early design remains closely involved throughout construction, commissioning and ongoing support.

Behind them is a group of experienced designers, engineers and pool specialists – many of whom have been part of the Mermaid team for decades – bringing deep technical knowledge and consistency to every project.

That continuity matters. It means the people responsible for building your pool are experienced, accountable and genuinely invested in the quality of the work.

Many of our clients return to us years later for refurbishments, upgrades or additional leisure elements. The same team is often still here to help.

FAQs

FAQs

  • Where do you work?

We primarily work across Kent and East Sussex, including Tunbridge Wells, Sevenoaks, Cranbrook and Tenterden, and also cover South London and parts of Surrey. If you are slightly outside these areas, we are always happy to discuss your project.

  • How long have you been building pools?

Mermaid was established in 1981 and remains a third-generation family-run business. Over more than four decades, we have built and refurbished hundreds of pools across the region.

  • Do you manage the entire project?

Yes. We provide an in-house service that covers design guidance, technical specification, construction, commissioning and ongoing maintenance. This ensures accountability and continuity throughout the project.

  • Do you only build pools?

While bespoke concrete pools remain at the heart of our work, many projects evolve into complete outdoor leisure environments. These may include spa pools, swim spas, saunas, enclosures and other complementary elements designed to work cohesively with the pool and garden.

  • Do you refurbish existing pools?

Yes. Many of our projects involve refurbishing and upgrading older pools. This may include structural improvements, modern filtration systems, new finishes, covers or energy-efficient equipment.

  • What accreditations do you hold?

Mermaid is a member of several recognised industry organisations, including SPATA (Swimming Pool and Allied Trades Association), BISHTA (British and Irish Spa and Hot Tub Association), IPSE, and The Concrete Society. We are also REFCOM accredited for the safe handling of refrigerants.

In addition, our work has been recognised with multiple SPATA Gold Awards, including Refurbishment of the Year in 2023 and 2024. These accreditations and awards reflect our commitment to high construction standards, technical expertise and professional accountability.

  • What happens once the pool is finished?

After commissioning, we provide full guidance on operating the pool and maintaining water quality. We also offer ongoing maintenance services to ensure the pool continues to perform as intended over the long term.

  • Do you offer advice before we commit to a project?

Yes. Most projects begin with an initial consultation where we discuss your space, ideas and any practical considerations. This allows us to offer early guidance so you can explore options before making decisions.

New Pool
The team at Mermaid were excellent to work with from design and scoping through to implementation, working alongside our garden landscaping team, and now, 4 years on, with ongoing care of the pool. It has been transformative for our kids and is used for hours almost every day and looks as good as it did the day it was finished. Thanks guys we really appreciate what you have done.

Maintenance
The Mermaid team looked after our pool for many years. The Russell family run a very professional operation that is responsive, reliable and friendly. The regular service visits, adapted to the seasons, ensured that our pool was always in perfect condition. When equipment needed replacing, the recommended materials were of excellent quality and good value for money. If you are considering investing in a new pool or need help in managing your existing pool, I highly recommend Mermaid to do the job.

Refurbishment
Mermaid was fantastic from beginning to end on our recent pool project. The team was professional, knowledgeable and kept us updated every step of the way. They stayed on schedule, worked within our budget and were genuinely a joy to work with. The final result exceeded expectations and we absolutely love our pool. We would not hesitate to recommend Mermaid to anyone thinking about one .

Would highly recommend Mermaid Pools - everything from initial discussions with the sales team to the site prep and pool build, then after sales service has been great. Always responsive in a timely manner if we need advice or a call out and all the team are professional, friendly and efficient. So glad we chose Mermaid to create our beautiful pool.

New Pool
We are absolutely delighted with our new swimming pool. Mermaid have made an excellent area for us to relax and unwind by and keep fit. From the very first visit, through the planning phase and onto the build and construction Mermaid were very reliable and professional. Nothing was too much trouble and they listened to our wishes. All the staff are reliable and friendly. We have Mermaid maintain our pool and they keep the pool and water quality to a high standard. If we have any minor problems or concerns they always come over to sort them out in a timely fashion. We have no regrets in having Mermaid construct and maintain our pool and I would strongly recommend them. 5 stars well deserved. Keep up the good work.
